Two days later, per Eve's instruction, I'm standing in a pair of borrowed board shorts and a ratty t-shirt. I stretch my arms over my head, trying to loosen the knots in my shoulders before making a break for the beach when I spot him. He's standing on the boardwalk in faded board shorts and an old surf tee, his feet firmly planted in the sand. The way he weaves in and out of the groups of people dotting the beach, as fluid as the ocean and with as much charm and charisma as a crashing ocean wave makes it seem like the swell and salty ocean air have been a part of his life forever. His turquoise eyes, perfectly tanned skin, and honey blonde hair that somehow has been naturally highlighted in all the right places by the sparkling California sun meet mine with an intensity that takes my breath away.

Air lodges in my throat as I step down from the pier and make my way to where he's skidded to a stop near the lifeguard tower.

He waves and steps closer until we're inches apart and offers me his hand. "Hi, I'm Nick," he says with a friendly yet cocky smile that sends butterflies fluttering in my stomach. "Eve said you could use some help catching waves."

I take it tentatively, surprised by how calloused it feels against mine. His grip is strong and confident, sending warmth all the way through me until I blush beneath his gaze. "I... I've never been surfing before. Did she tell you that?”

He laughs and offers a sly wink. "She did. But she also said, You are a girl who likes adventure, and you don't back down from a challenge." He gestures to a long row of surfboards standing up in the sand, each of different lengths in vibrant colors and decorated in various tropical patterns. "So, what do you say?" He offers me his hand again, along with that lopsided boyish smile. "Want to give it a go?"

I hesitate for a moment before taking his hand. "What the hell, right?"

He nods. "Exactly." My heart races as I follow him toward the shore. He leads me to a spot in front of the lifeguard tower. As he steps back after guiding me onto the board, Nick stands back and watches as I balance myself on the surfboard, swaying a little at how unsteady it is at first while trying to contain my excitement. I have always wanted to try surfing, But Montana isn't exactly built for choice waves, and I haven't had any time to visit the beach since I moved here.

"This is awesome!” I say, flashing him a thumbs up." He laughs and puts a hand over his eyes to shield them from the sun. “I'm glad you like it. Should we try something a little harder?

He points out some breaking waves and shows me how to paddle out into them; before I know it, Nick and I move past the breakers, and he calls out, "Ready to practice your pop-ups?"

I nod and push into a crouch.
